Car Servicing in India – Huge Gap in the After Sales Market

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

The car servicing market is unorganized in India. The car servicing market includes authorized service centers of vehicle manufacturers, some organized service centers, and roadside mechanics.

OEM dealers, Authorised service centers ASC (set up by vehicle manufacturers) are popular for providing good infrastructure like customer waiting rooms, clean workshops areas, trained mechanics, proper tools and equipment needed to perform repairs, genuine parts and transparent billing.

On the other side, roadside mechanic use spare parts openly available in the aftermarket that was cheaper compared to genuine spare parts. Mostly spare parts manufacturers that supply to car manufacturers sold the same spare parts in the open aftermarket. It has created competition.

Authorized service station charge heavily because of their infrastructure and labour cost and road side workshops charge less. Customer search for other cheapest workshops when their car warranty gets expired.

Many corporate like Bosch, Mahindra, TVS, Castrol, Mobil1 are opening their authorized service stations in India. Bosch has over 260 Bosch Car Service, Mahindra First Choice Services has 7 multibrand car workshops. Carnation has setup 12 hubs all over India in major cities.

There is transformation from OEM dealers, ASC and road side mechanics to organized authorized service centers. The factors that are driving this transformation are increasing car population, dominance of the unorganized segment and the ever-increasing gap between customer expectation and fulfillment.

Carmakers will no longer make warranties by authorised dealers only

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

According to news, European Union officials rules covering the car sector could make it easier for consumers to use independent repair facilities rather than authorised service station garages (Source: FTP.com)

In Europe, this rule benefits more to customers having more choices for car servicing while they can get spare parts easily available at independent repair center. It would enforce more competition and reduce maintenance costs. During few years, repair costs are increasing because of many factors.

In India, OEM service dealers are authorized to do servicing during warranty period and car owner has no choice other than car maker authorized car dealer. There are many un authorized road side car workshops, they cater to 60% of car owners after warranty expired. Spare parts are not easily available and multibrand workshops have major problem sourcing it, as OEM supports authorized service stations. Similar rules in India can benefit car owners when they have more choices.

No Surprise when you get car servicing and on road assitance at one stop shop

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

It would be no surprise when you will be able to sell your car, get car servicing and on-road breakdown assistance at one stop shop.

Mahindra First Choice has established its brand in used car and now opening multi-brand service outlets. There are 7 car servicing stations in India.

My TVS, TVS Group, has planned to expand multi-brand car servicing business to 14 States by year-end. My TVS provides independent after-market services including car services, used-car business and roadside breakdown assistance. TVS invested more than Rs 30 crore into the after-market business. (Source: The Hindu )

Today, Mahindra FirstChoice Wheels ties up with MyTVS for on road breakdown assistance services (Source: The Hindu).

It is interesting to know both corporate GROUPS run used car outlets, and opening car service stations all over India. How they will differentiate?

Customers are going to get benefits from their services, but these tie ups may confuse customers to make a choice as they may be competing with each other. Customers who have breakdown service, obviously need help for car servicing. So MyTVS may get its advantage of having both services at one stop shop. The company has its roadside assistance service network in 21 States but its main verticals used-car business and multi-brand car servicing have not yet been extended beyond Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Multibrand or Specialized Workshops – What do you prefer?

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Nowadays when i get a spare time, i just throw questions in different forums to get views what car owners think about Multibrand workshops and Specialized OEM Authorized workshops. Here are some comments i have for visitors. Hope this would help while choosing between 2.

Comment 1. > According to my personal opinion the one good thing about the independents (multibrand), if it is a real good shop, then you can develop more of a family relationship with them. The more likely a customer will choose to pay the higher price from a franchised dealer (authorized service center) for that “peace of mind” of having the work done by OEM-backed professionals –and the work covered by the manufacturer guarantee.

Comment 2: For multi brand and specialized car workshop same as two side of coin

OEM : Authorized Workshop have load on Free Service Cars & have all quality parts & technology for their range of cars.

Multi Brand Workshop : Only Post warranty customer come. OEM can definitely charge higher price where as Multi brand can give you nice customer experience.

Comment 3: I think Multibrand can also do well in “technology” if they are Authorized one like BOSCH Service Centers. In India BOSCH Ltd. bringing same concept for 500 workshops by next year and presently there are 260 garages/workshops all over India.

Car Servicing in India

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Leaving car at workshop, rushing to the office in the morning, following up with the car dealers for the whole day and get it back before closing of the workshop . Looking at the bill and the work done, you are not satisfied with the car dealer…. This is what you can call it car servicing in India. It is a painful experience in India. (Most of the cases).

It is common to have this experience because car owners have: (1). No choice to find another best dealer. (2). No easy way to contact other car dealers.

MeriCAR is doing an effort to make car servicing booking comfortable by booking it online using Web Forms and Mobile/SMS. Car owners receive call from car dealers and can choose car dealer of their choice. Most of the dealers who have pick and drop services are getting selected.

People do not remember his car service due date, because it is a painful experience and like bitter medicine. I must say, this would be a revolution if all car owners visit to car dealer on his car service due date. It needs regular reminders.

That is another good effort MeriCAR would be doing using web-based software. It would keep reminding car owners to take care of their car with regular and in-time check up.

Relaunch of MeriCAR.com – Focus on Total Car Care Service

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Today MeriCAR.com has been relaunched with new sections and features.Today MeriCAR.com has been relaunched with new sections and features.

To meet objective of “total car care services”, MeriCAR.com has added new section Car Insurance. Ask the expert for car problems is improved section.

Design of MeriCAR.com is more focus with just three option broadly – Car Service, Car Insurance, Car Problem. The team may be just running around these three options to get revenue from the portal (and keeping an option for advertising in future.)

Car Service section has major improvement over just simple sending enquiry form. Now customer has two options while sending enquiry, one is MeriCAR.com recommendation and other is simple customer’s choice. MeriCAR.com recommendation will improve services at car dealers side and give benefits to customers of competition.

It was seen that popular car dealers do not care about customers and MeriCAR recommendation will help customer to get car service done in time (when car dealer’s driver just forgot picking up customer’s car and customer was just waiting – it was funny).

Having implemented Mobile SMS along with Email for password verification are great improvement over last version.

MeriCAR.com would be planning to have reviews from customers to help car dealers to improve their services.

Hope you like new site. Please do send feedback. Thanks.
